FAQS

1.Who is Serving You Musically, Inc.?

Serving You Musically, Inc. is an independent music publishing administration company.

2.Is Serving You Musically, Inc. a publishing company?

No, SYM is not a publishing company. SYM administers copyrights on behalf of music publishers.

3.What services does SYM provides?

Please see our services page for more detail information.

4.What is music publishing?

When a song is written, the songwriter owns the rights to that song. When that song is recorded and made available to the public, that song is technically “published”. Once that song is published the song can be performed by anyone so long as certain “royalties” or fees are paid to the owner (music publisher) of the copyrights.

5.What is the difference between a publishing administrator and a traditional publisher?

When a songwriter/composer chooses to keep the rights to their publisher rights they hire a publishing administrator to handle all the day to day administration such as mechanical and synchronization licensing, registering of song titles with their affiliated performing rights society, tracking and collecting royalties, etc. To perform these duties the administrator collects a small nominal fee.

A traditional publisher enters into an agreement with a songwriter and within that agreement the songwriter has transferred all ownership and rights to that publisher. For the transferring of ownership and rights all royalties generated are collected by the publisher, with the exception of performance royalties, and are split 50/50.

6.What is the advantage of hiring an administrator?

The advantage of hiring an administrator is that you are not transferring ownership rights to a third party you retain all ownership and control, all approvals must be obtained by you before the administrator issues any licenses, your share of publishing income is more as apposed to what you would receive in a traditional publishing or co-publishing deal.

7.What are the criteria’s a songwriter/publisher must meet in order to hire SYM as their publishing administrator?

A publisher administrator is only useful if your song is in “active” mode meaning that song would have to be in one of these following stages:

A record company has or will commercially release your song on cd, vinyl and cassette;
A film/TV production company has approached you to use your song used in a movie or television show;
Your song receiving broadcast performances (radio or tv airplay);
Documents claiming ownership on a song that will generate royalties.

8.Does SYM shop materials?

At the current moment we do not provide this service. However, it is something we are looking to implement in the near future. Please check back periodically in our services section.

9.Is it necessary to copyright my works?

Once you create any musical content it is automatically copyrighted. However, we always recommend that you register your songs with the copyright office, Library of Congress, to protect you in the event of copyright infringement. Your registration will serve as proof legally that you are claiming ownership to your work.

10.If I don’t have any current projects, can SYM still take me on as a client?

We primarily look for active clients; however in some cases we make exceptions to take on a client who has worked on projects but have never collected royalties.
